Why Motivation Matters
Motivation is the internal force, the energy, that causes us to act. When it’s strong, people have purpose, solve problems, and feel well. When it’s low, energy quietly drains away and their mojo disappears.
Think of motivation as invisible fuel: without it, not much happens; with it, individuals thrive and businesses flourish.
As I often say: motivation is that hidden ingredient that helps you unlock your potential, achieve more, and feel better in yourself.
Making the Invisible Visible (Motivational Maps®)
Used by 70,000+ people worldwide, Motivational Maps® make motivation tangible and actionable.
-
Easy – a simple questionnaire, completed in around 10–15 minutes.
-
Accurate – ISO 17065 accredited, built on over a decade of research into psychology and motivation.
-
Useful – clear reports showing your key motivators, your current motivation level, and practical steps to boost it.
Individual reports can also be combined into Team or Organisation profiles, creating a shared language of motivation that transforms how people work together.

The 9 Motivators
We all share the same nine motivators, but in different order and intensity, which is why what drives one person can leave another cold.
The motivators sit in three clusters:
-
Relationship – People are the priority.
Motivation comes from connection, belonging, and recognition. These individuals thrive on teamwork and long-term relationships. The risk? Getting too comfortable and avoiding difficult conversations.
-
Achievement – Success is the focus.
Motivation comes from goals, challenges, and mastering their work. These individuals are driven by achievement, control, or financial reward. The risk? Becoming so focused on “doing” that they lose sight of bigger-picture growth.
-
Growth – Self-actualisation is key.
Motivation comes from freedom, creativity, and purpose. These individuals are energised by change and making a difference. The risk? Chasing the new without finishing what’s already started, or overlooking stability.

Your top three motivators are critical for wellbeing and performance. Your lowest motivator won’t drive you, but if ignored it can still de-motivate, and it shapes how you see others.
How Motivational Maps® Help
Resolve the “rubs”
When tensions arise between people, Maps® make motivation visible so colleagues understand themselves and each other. For example: if a Director (driven by control and influence) works with a Spirit (driven by freedom and independence), friction is likely. Once both see the difference, they gain a better appreciation of each other, leading to more constructive conversations and stronger collaboration.
Spot gaps & blind spots
If your whole team are Searchers (driven by meaning and making a difference), who’s looking after the Builder motivator (money and material goals) to keep the business profitable?
If everyone’s a Creator (innovation and ideas), who’s acting as the Defender (stability and predictability) to keep things steady?
Maps® highlight missing motivators that could weaken your business.
Adapt your language
One of the biggest breakthroughs is learning to speak to what motivates others.
For example: if you’re a Creator (energised by new ideas) but your team includes Defenders (who value security), what you see as exciting growth and improvement may feel unsettling to them. By framing change as steady and reliable progress, you’ll bring them with you.
Motivation & Growth
Maps® also help you see what’s most important right now, invaluable for small business owners who need to:
-
Decide where to focus time and energy in the business.
-
Plan for growth without burning out.
-
Identify what will keep themselves and their team engaged for the long term.
-
Ask: “what do we want to achieve next as a business, and how do we get there?”
A real example: one client told me, “I can’t change jobs, I’m in a pensions trap.” His Motivational Map showed not only that his motivators weren’t being met, but that they were completely misaligned with the ethos of the company he was working for. Within weeks, he’d made a bold move: a new company, in a new country, on a better salary.
For business owners, the same principle applies. Maps® give you the clarity and confidence to see where things aren’t aligned, and to make the changes that are essential for both wellbeing and performance.
Motivation & Wellbeing
Maps® don’t just show what drives you, they reveal how motivated you are right now.
Low motivation doesn’t just hit performance, it chips away at wellbeing too. Reports highlight:
-
Your current motivation level
-
Which motivators are being met (and which aren’t)
-
Practical steps to boost energy and engagement
That way, you’re not just left with insight, you get a clear plan of action to get your mojo back.
And if low motivation is being reinforced by stress, anxiety or unhelpful internal patterns, I can offer optional hypnosis and NLP techniques to gently support mindset shifts – always used only when helpful and entirely your choice.
